According to Pirates Prospects’ Sean McCool, the Pirates are promoting Mitch Keller from the Bradenton Marauders to the Altoona Curve.
The Pirates selected Keller in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft. The 21-year-old right-hander had a breakout season last year, as he posted a 2.46 ERA, along with a 0.92 WHIP and a K/9 of 9.5 in 23 starts for the West Virginia Power, as well as a six shutout inning performance in his only start for the Marauders. Not only was he the biggest breakout performer in the organization a year ago, but he was also named the 2016 Pirates Minor League Pitcher of the Year.
Keller began the 2017 season with Bradenton. Despite a DL stint because of lower back stiffness, he has continued to put up strong numbers, posting an ERA of 3.14, a 1.00 WHIP and a .207 batting average against in 15 starts for the Marauders. Keller is currently rated the second best Pirates prospect by MLB Pipeline.
