According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Pirates are one of seven teams who had a scout in attendance to watch Oakland A’s starter Sonny Gray pitch against the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Center on Tuesday.
Gray is arguably the biggest trade candidate heading into the deadline. The 27-year-old righty has spent his entire big league career with the Athletics to this point. Gray’s best year came in 2015, posting a 2.73 ERA, a 143 ERA+ and a 3.7 WAR, while being named an All-Star for the first time, as well as finishing third in the AL Cy Young voting.
Looking to build off his strong 2015 campaign, Gray had a difficult time staying healthy last season, which resulted in a 5.69 ERA. He has bounced back nicely this year, putting up an ERA of 3.43, along with a 3.24 Fielding Independent Pitching and a 2.2 WAR. Gray will have two more years of club control beyond this season.
