Jim Callis Ranks Pirates Draft Class as Third Best

By Jason Shetler

On Thursday, Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline released his rankings of the Top 5 teams who had the best draft class based on selections. The Pirates made the list, as they were ranked third best.

Callis mentioned first rounder Shane Baz having an unhittable cutter, to go along with his fastball that can hit 98 mph. Second round pick Steve Jennings has a good fastball and a potential plus slider. Callis says that outfielders Calvin Mitchell (the other second round pick) and Conner Uselton (competitive balance) each have power potential. They also drafted third baseman Dylan Busby (third round) and catcher Deon Stafford (fifth round), both of whom were standouts in the Cape Cod League. Callis liked the selection of Cody Bolton (sixth round), who he described as a very projectable, high-school right-hander.
