The Pirates have announced that pitcher Matt Frawley has been sent to the New York Yankees to complete the Johnny Barbato deal.
In mid-April, the Pirates acquired Barbato from the Yankees, initially to serve as bullpen depth in AAA. He was called up to Pittsburgh the final week of April. Barbato struggled with the Pirates, posting a 4.84 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP in 15 appearances. He was optioned back to Indianapolis last week.
Frawley was a 17th round selection of the Pirates in last year’s draft out of Purdue. The 21-year-old righty had been pitching terrific this year for the Low A West Virginia Power, where he put up an ERA of 1.62, along with a 0.75 WHIP in 19 relief appearances.
