With their 12th overall pick in this year’s MLB Draft, the Pirates have selected pitcher Shane Baz.
Baz is a 6’3 right-hander from Concordia Lutheran High School in Texas, the same school that produced Ke’Bryan Hayes, the Pirates first round compensation pick in 2015. Baz currently has commitment to pitch at TCU. His fastball sits in the mid-90’s, while the cutter and slider have the potential to be plus pitches. The selection of Baz marks the first time they have taken a prep pitcher in the first round since Jameson Taillon in 2010.
