According to Pirates Bullpen, and confirmed by Pirates Prospects, the Pirates are calling up A.J. Schugel and Edgar Santana from AAA Indianapolis. No corresponding moves have been made, but Santana would have to be added to the 40-man roster.
Schugel was claimed by the Pirates off waivers from the Seattle Mariners prior to last season. The 27-year-old righty did some nice work for the Bucs a year ago, as he posted a 3.63 ERA, an ERA+ of 114 and a 3.19 Fielding Independent Pitching in 36 appearances. Surprisingly, he did not make the Pirates bullpen out of Spring Training. The month of April started off very rough for Schugel, posting a 9.82 ERA, but has been lights out since then, with a combined 0.95 ERA in May and June with Indianapolis.
Santana signed with the Pirates in 2013 out of the Dominican Republic. He quickly emerged through the system, especially in 2016, in which he pitched across three levels with Bradenton, Altoona and Indianapolis, putting up a combined ERA of 2.71 and a 1.08 WHIP in 43 appearances. Santana has been pitching terrific this season for Indianapolis, registering a 1.93 ERA, along with a WHIP of 1.01 in 23 games pitched.
