The Pirates have announced that Ivan Nova has been named the National League Pitcher of the Month for April.
After being acquired by the Pirates from the New York Yankees at last year’s trade deadline, Nova decided to stay in Pittsburgh, by signing a team-friendly three-year contract this past offseason.
In five April outings, Nova was exceptional, as he posted a 1.50 ERA, along with a 291 ERA+, and a WHIP of 0.75, which is currently the best mark in the NL. He also pitched two complete games. The first was April 17th against the St Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Despite taking a loss, he allowed two runs in eight innings and threw just 78 pitches. The other was this past weekend versus the Marlins in Miami, where he performed “The Maddux”, pitching a three-hit shutout with 95 pitches in a 4-0 victory. Since joining the Pirates, Nova has more complete games (5) than walks allowed (4), which is still really hard to fathom.
