Baseball America Ranks Elias Diaz Third Best Defensive Catcher in the Minors

By Jason Shetler

p/c: Tim Williams – Pirates Prospects

In the last post, I wrote about Baseball America ranking Kevin Newman the second best strikezone judgement batter in the minors. Another Pirates prospect to make BA’s tools list was Elias Diaz, who was ranked third among best defensive catchers.

For the past few years, Diaz has not only been the top defensive backstop in the Pirates system, but he’s been one of the best in all of minor league ball. What makes him stand out behind the plate is his ability to make consistently accurate throws, while displaying a very strong arm. Diaz will look to stay on the field in 2017, as he missed a good portion of last year with an elbow injury and a leg infection. He will start out this season with AAA Indianapolis.
