On Friday, Baseball America came out with their tools list, with different categories for minor league players. In the category for best strikezone judgement, Pirates prospect Kevin Newman was ranked second best on the list.
Since being drafted by the Pirates as a first rounder in 2015 out of the University of Arizona, Newman has been one of the toughest batters to strikeout in the minors. Last season, he struckout only 7.7% of the time in 457 plate appearances combined with the Bradenton Marauders and Altoona Curve. The Pirates #2 prospect was not only difficult to strikeout, but he actually drew more walks, posting a solid 9.3% walk rate. Newman is likely to begin the season in AAA with the Indianapolis Indians.
