According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Josh Harrison will be joining the Team USA roster for the World Baseball Classic. Rosenthal speculates that he could be replacing the St. Louis Cardinals Matt Carpenter, who is currently dealing with back stiffness. Harrison is now the second Pirates player on the roster, alongside Andrew McCutchen.
2017 will mark Harrison’s seventh season in a Pirates uniform. Since his 2014 All-Star campaign, he’s been unable to replicate that success each of the past two seasons. Despite subpar offensive numbers in 2016, Harrison was one of the better defensive second basemen in the National League, posting a 1.1 dWAR, along with eight Defensive Runs Saved.
