On Thursday, Dave Cameron of FanGraphs put out an article, ranking the ten best offseason transactions. One of the moves mentioned was the Pirates signing of Ivan Nova, which was ranked fifth best according to Cameron.
The Pirates acquired Nova during last year’s trade deadline from the New York Yankees. The 30-year-old right-hander was exceptional after coming to Pittsburgh, as he posted a 3.06 ERA along with an ERA+ of 137 in 11 starts.
Cameron said he was bewildered by how much the Pirates were able to bring back Nova for. He signed for three years at $26 million, which was $10 million less than J.A. Happ received from the Toronto Blue Jays last offseason, and Happ was in the same situation as Nova. With a market that was thin on starting pitching this offseason, Cameron believes that the Pirates got a solid pitcher at a price you would expect to give more to a much worse player.
