MLB.com unveiled their list of the Top 10 first base prospects for 2017, and finishing #2 on the list was Josh Bell. Dodgers prospect Cody Bellinger was the only first baseman ranked higher.
Bell started off the 2016 season for AAA Indianapolis. The 24-year-old switch-hitter had an OPS of .850 in 114 games with the Indians, which was good for fifth best in the International League.
On July 8th, Bell received his call up to Pittsburgh. In 45 games for the Pirates, he put up a .775 OPS along with a 107 OPS+. Bell’s ability to draw the free pass was outstanding, as he posted a 13.8% walk rate. The biggest knock on Bell right now is his defense, which hopefully will improve moving forward.
