The Pirates have announced managerial hires for three of their minor league affiliates. Andy Barkett, Gera Alvarez and Bob Herold will be managing the Indianapolis Indians, Bradenton Marauders and Gulf Coast League Pirates respectively.
Barkett takes over for Dean Treanor, who is now on the Miami Marlins staff as their bullpen coach. Treanor had managed Indianapolis the past six seasons. Barkett was the Pirates Minor League Assistant Hitting Coordinator this year. He has prior managerial experience, managing in the Detroit Tigers system from 2007 to 2010, and in the Marlins organization from 2011 to 2014.
Alvarez replaces Michael Ryan at Bradenton after the Pirates named Ryan the skipper for the Altoona Curve. Altoona’s vacancy was left open, following Joey Cora being added to the Pirates staff to become the new third base coach. Alvarez had served as a coordinator in the Pirates Dominican Republic Academy, and also managed their Dominican Summer League affiliate from 2012 to 2014.
Herold joins the Pirates organization to manage the GCL club. Prior to being hired, he was the winningest coach at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Herold was also a skipper in the Kansas City Royals organization from 1994 to 1998.
