Pirates Release David Whitehead

By Jason Shetler

The Pirates have released pitcher David Whitehead, this according to John Dreker of Pirates Prospects.

Whitehead was a 34th round pick of the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2013 MLB Draft. Last offseason, the Pirates acquired Whitehead from the Phillies in the Charlie Morton deal.

2016 was just a disaster year for Whitehead. He began the season with AA Altoona where he posted an ERA of 7.83 along with a 2.15 WHIP in 46 innings pitched. The Pirates demoted Whitehead to their Bristol affiliate in June, and he struggled there as well, posting a 7.13 ERA with a 1.87 WHIP in 35.1 innings.
