According to Pirates Prospects’ John Dreker, the Pirates have released pitcher Billy Roth.
Roth was drafted by the Pirates in the 2013 MLB Draft as a 16th round selection out of high school. He was considered one of the best late round draft picks that year by Baseball America.
Despite featuring a mid-90’s fastball, as well as having an improved curveball, Roth really struggled to throw strikes this year, issuing 41 walks in 48.1 innings of work for the West Virginia Power and West Virginia Black Bears. His ERA with both affiliates was a combined 7.82.
