Today, the Pirates signed lefty reliever non-tender candidate Wade LeBlanc to a one-year deal with an option, this according to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman. LeBlanc was acquired by the Pirates from the Seattle Mariners in September and did well in limited time (12 IP 0.75 ERA)
The deal is cheap but there is a possibility that LeBlanc makes the Opening Day roster in the bullpen. This is especially the case if this is a prelude to a Tony Watson or Antonio Bastardo trade down the road. Overall, it’s worth taking the very cheap risk on LeBlanc and see what you can get. Maybe the Pirates will strike gold again, but let’s not play too much into this minor signing just yet.
