Starling Marte has announced that he will be playing for the Dominican Republic in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.
Marte is now the fourth player to be representing the Pirates in the WBC. The others are Francisco Cervelli (Italy), Jung-Ho Kang (South Korea) and Jared Lakind (Israel).
2016 was another solid year for Marte, as he was named an All-Star for the first time, and captured his second Gold Glove award. He hasn’t played a game since September 5th, when he was dealing with back spasms. The Pirates will be facing the Dominican Republic in an exhibition game at McKechnie Field on March 8th, so there’s a good chance Marte could play against the Bucs.
