The Pirates have signed reliever Dan Runzler to a minor league deal, this according to John Dreker of Pirates Prospects.
Runzler was a ninth round draft selection of the San Francisco Giants in 2007. The 31-year-old lefty spent parts of four seasons pitching in the Giants bullpen from 2009 to 2012 where he posted a 3.86 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP.
Prior to the 2016 season, Runzler inked a minor league deal with the Minnesota Twins. In 20 appearances with their AAA club Rochester, he had an ERA of 5.82 and was released by the Twins in June. Runzler’s next destination was Independent ball, signing on with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League in July. He put up a 1.95 ERA with them, but allowed a large amount of batters to reach base with a WHIP of 1.66 in 33 games. The Pirates signing of Runzler is nothing more than AAA depth.
