The Pirates announce that Zach Phillips has joined the team. To place him on the 40-man roster, Elias Diaz has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Towards the end of Spring Training this year, Phillips signed a minor league deal with the Baltimore Orioles. The soon-to-be 30-year-old lefty reliever made 49 appearances with AAA Norfolk where he posted a 4.45 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. Phillips however did put up a very impressive strikeout ratio of 12.5.
On August 31st, the Pirates acquired Phillips from the Orioles in exchange for Kyle Lobstein. He was sent to AAA Indianapolis and had two scoreless appearances with them. Phillips hasn’t pitched in a big league game since 2013 with the Miami Marlins. The Pirates added another southpaw to the roster on Tuesday, acquiring Wade LeBlanc from the Seattle Mariners.
