Stephen Alemais is being promoted from the West Virginia Black Bears to the West Virginia Power, Tim Williams of Pirates Prospects has reported.
Alemais was a third round selection of the Pirates in this year’s draft out of Tulane University. He was considered by most baseball publications as the best college shortstop in the draft, although the class of college shortstops wasn’t particularly strong this year.
In 39 games played with the Black Bears, Alemais posted a .611 OPS, but performed better in August with an OPS of .732. While his offense needs some work, the defense has been nothing short of stellar, posting a .957 fielding percentage along with a 4.29 RF/9 (Range Factor per 9), which is pretty close to Gold Glove caliber. It’s likely that Alemais could begin next season with the Bradenton Marauders.
