According to Matt Gajtka of DK Pittsburgh Sports, Chris Stewart will begin a rehab assignment on Friday with the Altoona Curve. Tyler Glasnow will make his first rehab start for Altoona on Sunday, this according to Alan Saunders of Pirates Prospects.
Stewart has been on the disabled list since July 4th with left knee discomfort. The 34-year-old backstop was practically playing through knee soreness for much of the season. At one point, Jake Stallings was called up from AAA Indianapolis to serve as an extra catcher. When the Pirates placed Stewart on the DL, they claimed Eric Fryer off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals. Stewart this season has posted just a .579 OPS, while throwing out 23% of baserunners.
Glasnow was put on the DL July 24th with shoulder discomfort. The Bucs top prospect has dominated AAA this year by posting a 1.94 ERA along with a 1.12 WHIP and a K/9 of 10.8 in 18 starts. Glasnow has made two starts with the Pirates where he’s posted an ERA of 5.40 with a 1.44 WHIP. He dealt with shoulder soreness in his second outing against the Philadelphia Phillies on July 23rd, and it’s hard to say if that contributed to his command issues that day. On Tuesday, Glasnow threw a 50 pitch simulated game at PNC Park.
