The Pirates have announced that Wilfredo Boscan has been released as the corresponding move for Ryan Vogelsong being added back to the 40-man roster.
Vogelsong hadn’t pitched since May 23rd after being struck in the face by a fastball while at the plate, which resulted in multiple facial fractures. The 39-year-old right-hander was pitching as a starter during his rehab stint with AA Altoona and AAA Indianapolis.
Boscan had pitched in the Pirates organization last year, and was re-signed to a minor league deal this past offseason. He spent most of 2016 with Indianapolis, posting a 3.75 ERA along with a 1.32 WHIP in 84 innings of work. Boscan also pitched for the Pirates, but struggled to the tune of a 6.46 ERA in six games, which included a spot start on June 21st where he allowed seven earned runs to the San Francisco Giants.
