The Pirates have agreed to terms with their 33rd round selection Austin Shields for a signing bonus of $205,000, which is over the slot amount, this according to John Manuel of Baseball America.
Shields was drafted by the Pirates out of St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Baseball America rated the 6’6 right-hander as the 189th overall draft prospect this year, making him a sixth round talent. Shields throws a low-90’s fastball that can reach up to 94 mph along with a slider that potentially could be a very good secondary pitch.
