The Pirates have announced that Francisco Cervelli will begin his rehab assignment tonight for AAA Indianapolis.
Cervelli hasn’t played since June 10th after breaking a hamate bone in his left hand. Since his injury, the Pirates have went with Chris Stewart, Erik Kratz, Jake Stallings and Eric Fryer as their catchers in some capacity.
Back in May, Cervelli and the Pirates agreed to a three-year extension worth $31 million. This season, he’s posting a .373 on base percentage in 201 plate appearances. Cervelli continues to be solid behind the plate, as he’s thrown out 30% of baserunners.
