The Pirates have announced that Jake Stallings has cleared waivers and was sent outright to AAA Indianapolis. He was designated for assignment on Tuesday in order to make room on the 40-man roster for Steven Brault.
Stallings has spent most of the 2016 season with Indianapolis. In 52 games played with the Indians, he’s posted just a .566 OPS. Stallings however has been solid behind the dish, throwing out 32% of baserunners.
A couple weeks ago, the Pirates called up Stallings after Chris Stewart was banged up, which left Erik Kratz as the only available catcher at the time. He caught only two games with the Bucs. While it seemed very unlikely that Stallings would be claimed by another club, it’s still nice to have a catcher remain in the organization for much needed depth.
