The Pirates have announced that Chris Stewart is heading to the 15-day disabled list with left knee discomfort. Meanwhile, Eric Fryer will take his place for the time bring.
Stewart has been banged up lately, as he was switching off behind the plate with Erik Kratz. In 31 games this season, Stewart is posting a .579 OPS. Defensively, he’s thrown out just 23% of basestealers, which is 8% below the league average.
Fryer was claimed off waivers on Sunday from the St. Louis Cardinals. The 30-year-old backstop originally had been acquired by the Pirates from the New York Yankees in 2009 as part of the Eric Hinske deal, and spent parts of two seasons with the Bucs in 2011 and 2012. Fryer has posted an .836 OPS in 24 games this year as the Cardinals backup catcher.
