According to MLB.com’s Jim Callis, the Pirates have agreed to terms with their third round selection Stephen (pronounced Stefen) Alemais on a signing bonus of $500,000, which is under the slot amount ($568,400).
Alemais is a 6’0, 190 lb shortstop, who the Pirates drafted out of Tulane. He was considered by most as the best college shortstop in the draft, although the class of college shortstops this year was lackluster. Still, Alemais is solid defensively at short with his good range and strong throwing arm, so there’s not much doubt that he can stick at the position. Offensively, he’s more of a contact type hitter with very little power. If Alemais isn’t able to hit enough consistently, he could be a serviceable utility man that can play multiple positions due to his defensive capabilities and athleticism.
