The Pirates announce that Trey Haley has been designated for assignment in order to make space on the 40-man roster for Erik Kratz, who was acquired today from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Haley signed with the Pirates back in January. Towards the end of Spring Training, he appeared to have an outside shot of making the club before eventually getting sent to AAA Indianapolis.
It was nothing but struggles at Indianapolis for Haley, as despite being able to clock his fastball into the upper-90’s, he had a very difficult time throwing strikes, issuing 20 walks in 24.1 innings while posting a 6.66 ERA. With hard-throwing relievers always being in high demand, it wouldn’t surprise me to see another team claim him off waivers.
