The Pirates have announced that Francisco Cervelli underwent hamate surgery and will be placed on the disabled list. In a corresponding move, they have acquired Erik Kratz from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in exchange for cash considerations.
Kratz began this season as the Houston Astros reserve catcher. The soon-to-be 36-year-old was just 2-for-26 at the plate for them, and was released on May 22nd. He then signed with the Angels on a minor league deal a couple weeks ago.
This will be Kratz’s second stint with the Pirates, making his Major League debut for them in 2010. He’s certainly the prototypical backup catcher by not providing much offensively, but being above average behind the plate, as his career caught stealing rate is at 33%.
