The Pirates have selected Will Craig out of Wake Forest University with the 22nd overall choice in the 2016 MLB Draft.
Craig is a 6’3, 235 pound third baseman. He was originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals as a 37th round pick in 2013, but chose to attend Wake Forest instead. Craig was named the ACC Player of the Year in 2015, and nearly captured the triple crown in the conference.
His main calling card is on base ability, as he posted a .520 OBP this season for the Demon Deacons. Craig was also a pitcher and reached up to 94 mph with his fastball, so he certainly has the arm strength for the hot corner. Because of his size however, it’s possible that a move to first base could be in order down the road. The selection of Craig marks the first time the Pirates have taken a college third baseman in the first round since Pedro Alvarez in 2008.
