According to Stephen Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Ryan Vogelsong had surgery on Thursday to repair multiple facial fractures. The procedure was performed at Allegheny General Hospital.
Vogelsong returned to the Pirates last offseason after pitching with them from 2001 to 2006. The 38-year-old right-hander has pitched in 12 games this season for the Bucs, which includes two spot starts. Vogelsong’s second start came in a makeup game on May 23rd against the Colorado Rockies at PNC Park. While batting in the second inning, he was hit in the left cheek by a Jordan Lyles’ fastball and had to leave the game on a cart. Pirates team doctors will re-evaluate Vogelsong next week and determine a rehab timeline.
