According to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, Justin Masterson has completed his rehab and will be joining the Indianapolis Indians.
Masterson was signed by the Pirates in April on a minor league deal. The former All-Star had a combined 5.75 ERA the past two seasons with the Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox. He had surgery performed on his pitching shoulder in late September last year.
The Pirates are no stranger to reclamation projects, and Masterson will be viewed as their project for this season. He’s always been able to get groundballs consistently, posting groundball rates of 50% or better in each of his eight big league seasons. Masterson had been throwing in Extended Spring Training before making a start for the Bradenton Marauders last Sunday. It’ll be interesting to see if the Pirates will use Masterson as a rotation option or in the bullpen as a long reliever.
