According to John Dreker of Pirates Prospects, Kevin Newman had to leave Thursday’s game in Jupiter after getting it in the left eye by a pitch in the eighth inning. The diagnosis of the injury is an orbital fracture. No word yet on the timetable of his return.
Newman was the Pirates first round selection a year ago out of the University of Arizona. MLB Pipeline ranked Newman as the Bucs #11 prospect entering 2016 while ESPN.com’s Keith Law recently listed him as a Top 25 prospect overall. He was putting up terrific numbers for the Bradenton Marauders, as he posted the Florida State League’s second best average at .346, and his .858 OPS was fifth best in the FSL. Newman is now the second Pirates prospect this year to suffer an orbital fracture, the first being Austin Meadows during Spring Training.
