The Pirates have announced that Cory Luebke has been activated from the disabled list. In order to make room on the roster, A.J. Schugel is being optioned back to AAA Indianapolis.
Luebke signed with the Pirates on a minor league deal in February. The former first round supplemental pick of the San Diego Padres made the Bucs Opening Day roster after having an opt-out clause in his contract. Luebke was placed on the 15-day DL with right hamstring tightness in mid-April, and appeared in seven rehab games with Indianapolis. Prior to the injury, he allowed three runs in three appearances with the Pirates.
Schugel was claimed off waivers by the Pirates from the Seattle Mariners in January. The 26-year-old right-hander began the season in Indianapolis before getting called up in mid-April to serve as an extra pitcher in the bullpen, which prompted the Pirates to designate Michael Morse for assignment. Schugel made 11 appearances out of the bullpen where he posted a 4.96 ERA, but had a much better 3.33 Fielding Independent Pitching.
