Pirates Release Daniel Bard

By Jason Shetler

According to Peter Gammons, the Pirates have released Daniel Bard.

Bard signed with the Pirates on a minor league deal in January with the hopes of turning his career around. From 2009 to 2011, he was an outstanding reliever for the Boston Red Sox, posting a 2.97 ERA along with a 161 ERA+ and a 9.9 K/9. Since then however, Bard has been derailed by both injuries and control problems. Those control issues continued with the Pirates in Spring Training, as his pitches went for strikes only 53% of the time. Bard was taking part in Extended Spring prior to his release.
