The Pirates have announced that Elias Diaz will undergo surgery on his right elbow this week.
Diaz was experiencing elbow discomfort during Spring Training, and was given treatments for it. The 25-year-old catcher made his Major League debut for the Pirates last year as a September call up. He was expected to begin 2016 with AAA Indianapolis, and would have been recalled in the event that Francisco Cervelli or Chris Stewart got injured. Diaz is considered one of the best defensive catchers in the minors while also being ranked the eighth best prospect in the Pirates system according to MLB Pipeline.
