The Pirates and Justin Masterson have agreed to a minor league contract, this according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.

Masterson spent 2015 with the Boston Red Sox, posting a 5.61 ERA with a 1.60 WHIP in 59.1 innings pitched. The former All-Star has compiled an ERA of 4.31 along with a 3.94 Fielding Independent Pitching and a 56% groundball rate in eight seasons with the Red Sox, Indians and Cardinals.

Last weekend, Trevor Williams sustained a shoulder injury in his season debut for AAA Indianapolis. The signing of Masterson would seem to indicate that the Williams injury could be serious, and that Masterson is going to fill his spot in the Indianapolis rotation.
