On Monday, Pirates Director of Minor League Operations Larry Broadway told Tim Williams of Pirates Prospects that Stephen Tarpley will start the season on the disabled list with an oblique injury.
The injury occurred last week when Tarpley threw warm up pitches before a minor league game, and was holding his right side. Timetable for his return is unknown to this point. The 23-year-old lefty enjoyed a very good 2015 campaign after coming over from the Baltimore Orioles in the Travis Snider trade. He put up a 2.48 ERA with a 1.15 WHIP and a K/9 of 8.1 in 20 starts for the West Virginia Power. Tarpley should join the Bradenton Marauders once he returns. MLB Pipeline ranked him the 19th best prospect in the Pirates system entering this year.
