The Pirates have announced that Elias Diaz has been experiencing right elbow discomfort. He will be given rest and treatments, and the plan is to reevaluate him in a week.
Hopefully the discomfort is a minor issue, which won’t lead to something that’ll have him missing significant time. Diaz is one of the best defensive catchers in the minors right now. He spent most of 2015 with AAA Indianapolis where he threw out runners at a 30% clip. The Pirates made him a September call up to be the third catcher alongside Francisco Cervelli and Chris Stewart. Entering this year, MLB Pipeline has Diaz as the eighth best prospect in the Pirates system, as well as the sixth best overall catcher in the minors.
