The Pirates have announced that pitcher A.J. Schugel has been claimed off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.
Schugel was drafted as a 25th round selection of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2010. The 26-year-old right-hander spent last season pitching in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. Between AA Mobile and AAA Reno, he posted a 4.84 ERA along with a WHIP of 1.48 in 21 combined starts. Schugel also made five relief appearances for the Dbacks, and appears to be a groundball pitcher since he threw a 2-seam fastball 45.6% of the time. He was claimed by the Mariners in December. The Pirates should have Schugel in AAA as bullpen depth.
