Pirates Bullpen Ranks Third Best in NL by Buster Olney

By Jason Shetler

After ranking the Pirates rotation seventh best overall, ESPN’s Buster Olney has ranked the Pirates bullpen as eighth best in baseball for 2016, and third best in the National League behind the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs.

The Pirates boast an elite closer and setup combo in Mark Melancon and Tony Watson. Jared Hughes is one of the best groundball relievers in the game while Arquimedes Caminero gives the Bucs a real powerful arm in later innings. Juan Nicasio is coming off a career year in 2015 with the Dodgers, and can provide multiple innings if need be. Olney says he likes the signing of Neftali Feliz. While Feliz is coming off a down year last season, advanced metrics show that he could bounce back in 2016.
