Pirates Claim Yoervis Medina from Cubs

By Jason Shetler

The Pirates have announced that pitcher Yoervis Medina has been claimed off waivers from the Chicago Cubs.

Medina made his big league debut for the Seattle Mariners in 2013. The Venezuelan right-hander was dealt to the Cubs in May of this year for catcher Wellington Castillo. Medina has put up good numbers, posting a 3.08 ERA along with a 121 ERA+ in three seasons with the Mariners and Cubs. The walks have been a problem for him with a 4.9 BB/9, but he also can rack up the strikeouts with a K/9 of 9.1. Medina could be a candidate to possibly make the Pirates bullpen out of Spring Training.
