According to John Perrotto, the Chicago White Sox offered to pay $8 of the $13 million left on Adam LaRoche’s remaining salary for a trade to the Pirates, but there was no interest.
LaRoche signed with the White Sox last offseason on a two-year deal worth $25 million. The 36-year-old shared his time between first base and DH. LaRoche struggled mightily in 2015, as he posted a .634 OPS along with a -1.4 WAR and a career low 12 home runs. Obviously the trade return wouldn’t have been much, but it’s the fact that the Pirates would have owed $5 million to a declining first baseman.
