According to MLB.com’s Adam Berry, the Pirates are said to be interested in free agent first baseman Mike Napoli.
Prior to 2013, Napoli was one of the marquee names on the open market when he signed with the Boston Red Sox. The 34-year-old struggled with the Red Sox this past season, posting a .693 OPS in 98 games played. Napoli was then dealt to the Texas Rangers a week after the trade deadline, and performed much better with a .908 OPS in 35 games. His walk rate this year remained impressive at 12.2% combined with the Red Sox and Rangers, which has been at 10% or better each of the last five seasons. Napoli’s defense at first base was also very good in 2015, as he put up a 4.4 UZR while being a finalist for the AL Gold Glove award.
