Pirates Sign Cole Figueroa and Robert Zarate

The Pirates have also announced the signings of infielder Cole Figueroa and pitcher Robert Zarate. Both signed minor league deals, and were given Spring Training invites.

Figueroa was a sixth round selection of the San Diego Padres back in 2008. The left-handed hitting infielder played the majority of 2015 with the New York Yankees AAA club Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, posting a .355 on base percentage. Even more impressive was that Figueroa struckout just 27 times in 507 plate appearances.

Zarate was with the Tampa Bay Rays this year, and pitched for their AAA affiliate Durham. The 28-year-old lefty threw 40.1 innings for the Bulls, as he posted a 2.90 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP and posted a 10.9 K/9.
