The Pirates have announced that Pedro Alvarez and Jaff Decker have both been non-tendered, which now makes them free agents.
Alvarez played six seasons with the Pirates after being the #2 overall pick by them in the 2008 MLB Draft. His best season was in 2013 when he blasted 36 home runs, which were tied for most in the National League that year. 2014 and 2015 unfortunately presented major defensive problems for him as a third baseman and first baseman respectively. Alvarez is 13th on the Pirates all-time home run list with 131.
Decker was acquired by the Pirates from the San Diego Padres prior to 2014. The former highly touted outfield prospect spent most of his time with AAA Indianapolis where he put up a .363 on base percentage. Decker received 36 plate appearances this past season for the Pirates, posting a .371 on base. The decision to non-tender Decker is surprising given his terrific on base ability.
