According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review’s Travis Sawchik, the Pirates are said to be interested in free agent pitcher Justin Masterson.
Masterson is coming off a poor year in 2015, which saw him post a 5.61 ERA in 59.1 innings pitched for the Boston Red Sox. His fastball velocity was a career low at 88 mph. Masterson had shoulder surgery towards the end of the regular season, which probably affected the velocity. The 30-year old right-hander is only a couple years removed from being a three-win pitcher (3.5 WAR) with the Cleveland Indians. His groundball rates have been 50% or better in each of his eight big league seasons. Masterson would be a good project for the Pirates to take on, assuming he can come back fully healthy.
