The Pirates have announced that pitcher Patrick Johnson has been purchased from the Sioux City Explorers of the American Association.
Johnson was a 25th round selection of the Colorado Rockies in the 2011 MLB Draft. The 27-year-old right-hander has spent the past couple years pitching Independent ball for Sioux City. This past season, Johnson made 20 starts for the Explorers where he posted a 2.08 ERA with a WHIP of 1.00 and an 8.9 K/9. He was named the 2015 American Association Pitcher of the Year. According to the Baseball America scouting report, Johnson throws a low-90’s fastball that can touch 94 mph along with a good breaking ball and a changeup. My guess is he could start out 2016 with AAA Indianapolis based on them needing the most rotation help.
