Pirates Promote Matt Ruebel to Special Assistant

By Jason Shetler

According to Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have promoted Matt Ruebel to special assistant to general manager Neal Huntington.

Ruebel is indeed the former Pirates reliever who was with them in 1996 and 1997. He also pitched for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays during their expansion season in 1998. After he retired, Ruebel became a scout in 2001 with the Cleveland Indians. He then went to the Baltimore Orioles in 2008. Ruebel was hired by the Pirates in 2011 as National Supervisor for the club. He now takes over as the special assistant to the GM, a role that had been left vacated when Jim Benedict joined the Miami Marlins a couple weeks ago.
