According to Pirates Prospects John Dreker, the Pirates have claimed pitcher Jorge Rondon from the Baltimore Orioles. He was designated for assignment last week when the Orioles claimed Vance Worley from the Pirates.
Rondon signed as an amateur free agent with the St. Louis Cardinals out of Venezuela back in 2006. The 27-year-old right-hander was claimed off waivers by the Colorado Rockies last offseason before then being claimed by the Orioles in May. Rondon pitched most of this year with AAA Albuquerque and AAA Norfolk where he combined for a 2.23 ERA along with a WHIP of 0.97 in 35 appearances. He also pitched for both the Rockies and Orioles, posting a 16.33 ERA in ten games total. Rondon is a power pitcher, as his average fastball velocity is at 95.1 mph.
